This scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to an Indigenous student studying Indigenous Archaeology or Cultural Heritage Management at Flinders University.

This scholarship has been possible after a generous donation from the Thorburn family.

About Flinders University

Flinders University is a public university in Adelaide, South Australia. Founded in 1966, it was named in honour of navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the South Australian coastline in the early 19th century. Aim and Benefits of Thorburn Indigenous Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Scholarship

There will be one scholarship awarded annually up to a value of $2,000. Payment will be made in two equal instalments, after each main semester census date.


Requirements for Thorburn Indigenous Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Scholarship Qualification

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
  • Identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and
  • Be accepted as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander by the community in which they live or have lived; and
  • Be making satisfactory academic progress; and
  • Normally be enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at Flinders University specialising in Indigenous Archaeology or Cultural Heritage Management.

Preference will be given to students who have already completed one year of full-time tertiary study or equivalent.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Thorburn Indigenous Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Scholarship

The scholarship will be awarded based on

  • Academic merit; and
  • The extent to which the scholarship will assist the student’s education

Priority will be given to applicants who are interested in pursuing a doctoral program in Indigenous Archaeology. However, this is not required, and all eligible students are encouraged to apply.

Please complete the Proof of Indigeneity document attached below and submit with your online application through the Flinders University Student System by the specified closing date. 

Applicants will need to login and navigate to the My Scholarships tab to submit an application. The application form for this scholarship is called "Thorburn Indigenous Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Scholarship", or you can search for it by the keyword "Thorburn". Please ensure all of your personal details are up-to-date in the Student System as you will be assessed using this information.
