Frank Wallace Scholarship is open to eligible offer-holders in the People’s Republic of China.
This scholarship is named after Professor Frank Wallace, a pioneer in diesel engine turbocharging research, and awarded on behalf of his family.
Professor Frank Wallace was born in Munich but left Germany in 1939 at the age of 15, and was educated at Monkton Combe School on the edge of Bath. He won a scholarship to the University of Birmingham, where he was both an undergraduate and postgraduate student.
In 1959, Professor Frank Wallace was appointed to the chair of mechanical engineering at Queen's University in Belfast. In 1965, he moved back to England, having been appointed a professor at what was then the Bristol College of Science and Technology.
This establishment soon became the University of Bath, with a new campus at Claverton Down, where he was chair of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath until his retirement in 1989. He was one of a group of pioneering researchers who were instrumental in opening up the USA to British engineers.
In a lifetime of intellectual effort focusing on diesel engine research, Professor Frank Wallace was made a fellow both of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the American Society of Automotive Engineers. He was chairman of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' Combustion Engines Group from 1973 to 1975.
The award commemorates his commitment to the teaching of engineering and supporting students in the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
The University of Bath is a public university located in Bath, Somerset, United Kingdom. It received its Royal Charter in 1966 and can trace its roots to a technical school established in Bristol in 1856.
