Aim and Benefits of David Sainsbury Scholarships Masters Scholarship

1. The David Sainsbury Full MSc Scholarship

Each full scholarship will cover up to:

• the full cost of the tuition fee (£36,000 international fee for 2026-27, £16,000 UK fee)
• maintenance grant (exact value at the UKRI postgraduate researcher stipend level to be determined for 2026-27; in 2025-26 it was £20,780)
• an additional £4,000 for travel costs (subject to valid economy class travel receipts)

2. The David Sainsbury 50% Fee Scholarship

Each 50% fee scholarship will cover up to up to 50% of the full cost of the tuition fee (50% of either £16,000 UK or £36,000 international fees for 2026-27), minus any other awards or scholarships you are in possession of that cover more than 50% of the fee.

Requirements for David Sainsbury Scholarships Masters Scholarship Qualification

1. The David Sainsbury Full MSc Scholarship

You are eligible for a full scholarship under these terms if you meet all these criteria:

• You are in receipt of an offer of a place on the UEA MSc in Global Plant Health
• You are a national of or domiciled in a least-developed, low-income, or lower-middle-income country or territory as defined by the Overseas Development Agency Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list for entry in the relevant academic year.

2. The David Sainsbury 50% Fee Scholarship

You are eligible for a full scholarship under these terms if you meet all these criteria:

• You are in receipt of an offer of a place on the UEA MSc in Global Plant Health

• You are not a national of or domiciled in a least-developed, low-income, or lower-middle-income country or territory as defined by the Overseas Development Agency Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list for entry in the relevant academic year. For example, you are a national of and domiciled in an upper-middle income country or higher income country (including the UK) according to this list.

There are a limited number of scholarships available and these will be awarded throughout the year, so you are advised to apply early.

Interview date, Process and Venue for David Sainsbury Scholarships Masters Scholarship

• You will be evaluated for the scholarship based on the same criteria used to evaluate your application to enrol on the course. The criteria are: academic achievement and academic awards together with knowledge/experience/potential of molecular biology, genetics, molecular interactions, data science such as bioinformatics and statistics, laboratory skills, and independent study.
• In addition, eligible applicants with an offer of a place on the course will then be required to provide a written statement of intent detailing a credible plan either to return to their low to middle-income country of origin to address plant disease or, for higher income country applicants, to address plant disease in low to middle-income countries in some way.

Scholarship recipients from low to middle-income countries will be expected to return to their country of origin within five years of completing their overseas studies to contribute to addressing plant disease through the advancement of science, agriculture, the economy, and the wider community. Recipients from higher income countries would be expected to address plant disease in low to middle-income countries in some way.

How to Apply

• To be considered for this scholarship, you need to apply for your place on the MSc in Global Plant Health. Provided you meet the eligibility criteria and are offered a place on the course after interview, you will automatically be considered for the scholarship, on a competitive basis - no separate application is required at this stage.
