The Visiting PhD Fellowship Program at UNU-WIDER offers doctoral students an invaluable opportunity to advance their dissertation or thesis research on developing economies. UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship Program

Aim and Benefits of UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship Program

Applicants will benefit the following:

• UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant to cover the cost of travel to and from the fellow’s Ph.D.-granting institution or country of residence.
• Medical insurance is provided for medical and hospital services resulting from sickness and accidents during the fellowship period.
• Fellows receive a monthly stipend of EUR 2,000 to cover living expenses while in Helsinki.
• The programme does not cover expenses or provide services for dependents.
• The monthly stipend only applies to the duration of the stay in Helsinki and does not cover online participation.

Requirements for UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship Program Qualification

To be eligible for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

• Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme and demonstrate the ability to research developing economies.
• Candidates from other social sciences are welcome to apply but should note that UNU-WIDER is primarily an economics-focused institute.
• Proficiency in oral and written English is required, along with strong quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills.
• The programme particularly encourages applications from early-career researchers, women, and researchers from developing countries.
• The programme is especially suited for researchers who are in the later stages of their PhD.
• The Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme is highly competitive, with only a limited number of fellows accepted each year.
• In recent years, the acceptance rate has been approximately one per cent of all applications.

UNU-WIDER only receives online applications for the Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme twice each year. Deadlines for submission of applications are 31 March and 30 September 23:59 UTC+3 each year.
