This scholarship is offered to provide financial support for w?hine M?ori students who grew up in Te Ika-a-M?ui (the North Island). The scholarship is focused on supporting students intending to undertake a Graduate Diploma of Teaching at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.

This scholarship has been established by Lyna Samosir for the purpose of encouraging and financially supporting the successful pursuit of tertiary qualifications and educational leadership for w?hine M?ori students from Te Ika-a-M?ui (the North Island).

Requirements for Victoria University of Wellington Lyna Samosir Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for the Lyna Samosir Scholarship, applicants must be w?hine M?ori students who grew up in Te Ika-a-M?ui (the North Island), have completed (or will be shortly completing) an undergraduate degree and intending to undertake either a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Primary) or Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) at the start of 2023 at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.

 

Interview date, Process and Venue for Victoria University of Wellington Lyna Samosir Scholarship

  • Applicants must be w?hine M?ori.
  • Applicants must have M?ori whakapapa and have grown up in Te Ika-a-M?ui (the North Island).
  • Applicants must have completed (or will be completing) an undergraduate degree and intending to undertake either a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Primary) or Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) at the start of 2023 at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants must have completed (or nearly completed) the relevant undergraduate courses to meet the entry requirements for either a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Primary) or Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary).
  • Preference will be given for w?hine M?ori who grew up in regional or rural communities.
  • Preference will be given to registered beneficiaries of T?hoe.
  • Preference will be given to students who completed their undergraduate degree at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.

The applicants will be shortlisted by a panel comprised of representatives from the Scholarships Office and a representative from the Office Deputy Vice-Chancellor M?ori, the Pouhere.

The donor will select the final recipients based on the recommendations of panel.

 


Documents Required for Application

  • A personal statement introducing themselves to the Grants Committee and to include a commitment by the student to ‘give back’ to the iwi in the future, and to state how they might do that.
  • Three references (from non-direct wh?nau sources) that speak to the students’ deservedness for the scholarship. The referees will need to state their relationship with the student (for example former school dean or teacher, sports coaches, church or cultural/marae/iwi leaders, employee) and should outline the student’s skills, talents or personal qualities that they have observed.

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
