Flinders University 2023 Carmel Baulderstone Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established from a bequest made from the estate of Bert and Carmel Baulderstone, and contributed to by their family, friends and colleagues.

In 1944 Carmel Summerfield (later Baulderstone) was registered as a nurse in South Australia after four years of training at Calvary Hospital, and later spent a further 9 months training in Obstetrical Nursing in Launceston. Like many of her generation, Carmel's nursing career ended on her marriage; however she retained a lifelong connection with nursing. She was an active member of the Calvary Past Nurses' Association and took a keen interest in medical research and changes to nursing practice. Providing support for students to undertake practical placements is consistent with Carmel's support for education and love of the nursing profession.

The Carmel Baulderstone Memorial Scholarship is designed to provide assistance to undergraduate nursing students admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing at Flinders University and enrolled in the second or third year of the course to undertake a Professional Experience Placement at a College of Nursing and Health Sciences-approved clincial education facility in a rural or remote setting.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the health needs of Australians living in rural and remote areas.
