Flinders University Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grant 2024

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a PhD scholarship to work on an ARC Discovery Project entitled: Understanding Ageism in Australia. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Tim Windsor and Drs Stephanie Wong and Bethany Wilton-Harding as part of the Generations Research Initiative in the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work at Flinders University.

The broader project is concerned with establishing the prevalence and key correlates of ageism in Australia, by collecting data in partnership with the 45 and Up Study. The PhD component will provide the opportunity to work with data from both a large population-based dataset, and a daily-diary study designed to examine experiences of ageism in everyday life.

Aim and Benefits of Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grant

The scholarship includes:

  • A stipend valued at $34,000 - $36,000 per annum tax free
  • The scholarship will be awarded for three years
  • A Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to cover tuition fees for Australian Citizens, NZ Citizens and Permanent Residents.

Requirements for Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grant Qualification

To be eligible for the award of this scholarship a student must:

  • Be an Australian citizen; or New Zealand citizen; or have been granted permanent resident status; and
  • meet PhD admission requirements including: have an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8) in psychology, including a research component of at least 6 months’ full-time study achieving Distinction (75%) OR including evidence of equivalent research experience, such as a substantial first-author refereed publication or track record as an investigator on a competitive grant; and
  • be available to commence as a full-time PhD student at Flinders University prior to June 2024

By lodging this separate application, applicants acknowledge:

  • The ‘Supervisor confirmation’ must refer to the application for this scholarship
  • The application for PhD admission will only be assessed where:
  • The applicant is successful in being awarded the scholarship

OR

  • The applicant confirms in the application for PhD admission that, if they are not successful in being awarded the scholarship, their supervisors agree that the project and enrolment can still proceed and the applicant agrees to this. 

The applications for HDR admission and the scholarship will be separate processes; applications for admission to candidature are submitted electronically (link above). Applicants should confirm that they have the endorsement of the project team before applying for HDR admission.

Prior to submitting applications, prospective applicants are advised to contact the Project lead, Tim Windsor via email ([email protected]) to discuss your interest in, and eligibility for the opportunity.  The Project lead may invite you to apply and request relevant documents such as a copy of your CV, your honours thesis (or equivalent) and a covering letter outlining your reasons for applying for the scholarship.

The project team will identify the successful candidate and release outcomes of the selection process by May 1. The successful candidate will ideally begin by June 2024, subject to negotiation.
