BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights Scholarships

BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights was established in 1996 as an intervention strategy to address the myriad of barriers to the actualization of the rights of women in all its forms under the three (3) parallel systems of law in Nigeria, namely customary, religious, and statutory laws, especially in Muslim-majority communities.

These challenges to the status of women and girls in Nigeria came to the fore during the 3-year research project on ‘Women and Laws’ which was undertaken by a multidisciplinary research team coordinated by the International Solidarity Network of Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) between 1993 and 1996.

BAOBAB became a legal entity limited by guarantee in 1998.
