Reporters Without Borders documents violations of the freedom of the press and information worldwide and alerts the public when journalists and their employees are in danger. We are committed to more security and better protection for journalists. We fight online and offline against censorship, against the use and export of surveillance technology and against restrictive media laws.
Our emergency aid department supports persecuted journalists and their families. The focus of our work is on helping those affected in their countries of origin. The aim is to help them in such a way that they can continue or resume their journalistic work. Reporters Without Borders replaces destroyed or confiscated equipment, pays legal fees, and posts bail for parole. After abuse or attacks, we enable threatened journalists to receive medical treatment. In the event of a work ban or dismissal, we provide financial bridging and support the family. We also mirror censored websites and inform persecuted journalists about data protection.
If it is life-threatening for journalists or their employees to stay in their home country, we try to find a safe host country.
