Scientific progress and innovation is critical for sustainable growth and equitable welfare and societies cannot afford that certain groups of citizens become marginalized at innovative work. This project will address the loss of innovative and scientific potential due to underrepresentation of women in science and technology. Gender inequalities in the general labor market have been related to the fact that women must endure a higher share of domestic responsibilities than their partners, while coping with the demands of their working life. The Nordic countries have long recognized some of the difficult trade-offs, responding through the introduction of ‘family-friendly’ policies where parents could stay on paid parental leave. However, there are potential adverse consequences of parental leave in high-skilled and knowledge-intensive jobs, since workers in science and technology suffer from a “burden of knowledge” and the time away from the job can lead to quick depreciation of knowledge. The project leverages micro data compiled on inventive (Denmark, Finland and Sweden) and publication (Denmark and Sweden) efforts and connected to administrative (register) data on individuals. This unique source of data will allow us to understand what distinguishes careers in science and technology and how women’s careers differ from those of men.
