Earth Journalism Network Seed Grants Call for Proposals for Media Outlets in Nepal 2024

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering 5 grants to media outlets in Nepal to support new media programming on natural resource management and green growth.

Overview

Nepal adopted a new constitution in 2015, which radically shifted its governance system from a unitary to a federal democratic one, with a three-tiered structure comprising federal, provincial, and local governments. In the process, many laws and regulations, including those related to hydropower development, forest management, and the sharing of natural resources, have been — or are in the process of being — amended.

These sectors are particularly vulnerable to climate impacts, as noted in the Second National Communication (NC2) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In fact, studies project that the country is likely to lose 2.2% of annual GDP due to climate change by 2050.

In light of these risks, the need for effective natural resource management, green growth and climate resilience is even more pressing. This will require federal, provincial, and local governments to work together to make use of natural resources such as rivers and forests sustainably, and to share the revenue derived from them equitably.

The recent changes in governance structure have granted local governments more fiscal authority, offering opportunities for decentralized decision-making and management, yet corruption remains rampant and implementation challenges abound.

At this juncture, it is key that the media in Nepal deepen their coverage of the country’s natural resource management to raise public awareness and drive better policy actions around these issues.

To meet this need, Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering five seed grants (4,500 Euros each) and mentorship to selected media outlets in Nepal. This round of grants is awarded as part of the Media for Inclusive Green Growth (MIGG) in Nepal project and EJN’s Asia-Pacific project, with funding from the European Union and Sida respectively.

Project themes and objectives

The objective of these grants is to increase the capacity of the media in Nepal to provide innovative and solutions-oriented information on green growth and natural resource management to the public and policymakers. The grants are intended to seed new programs, columns or sections that focus on these issues. Over the grant period, we expect that selected media outlets will each design and pilot a new program, producing at least two stories or episodes as proof of concept.

We are seeking media programming ideas that provide information on:

  • The impacts of poor governance and inefficient budgetary disbursement on natural resources, identifying corrupt practices that hinder the country’s green growth;
  • The impacts of hydropower projects on riverine ecosystems and freshwater biodiversity, infrastructure development on mountain ecosystems, etc.;
  • Government strategies, policies and potentially scalable solutions to manage Nepal’s natural resources more effectively;
  • Efforts of Indigenous and local communities that enhance green growth and support climate resilience.

We are particularly keen to support media products that amplify the voices and perspectives of marginalized and minority communities, create space for constructive dialogues and better inform communities, which in turn intensifies public pressure on policymakers to act.
