Flinders University Playford Trust / BHP Honours Scholarship 2025

The Playford Trust, in partnership with BHP, offers a $9000 Honours scholarship in geoscience, mining engineering or chemical engineering at any one of the three South Australian universities.

Located 560km north of Adelaide, BHP’s Olympic Dam is one of the world’s most significant deposits of copper, gold, silver and uranium. Olympic Dam includes underground and surface operations and operates a fully integrated processing facility from ore to metal. The underground mine is made up of more than 450km of underground roads and tunnels, with ore hauled by an automated train system to crushing, storage and hoisting facilities. On the surface, the metallurgical facility includes a grinding circuit, hydrometallurgical plant incorporating solvent extraction circuits for copper and uranium, a copper smelter, a copper refiner and a recovery circuit for precious metals.

The scholarship is valued at $9000 for one year.

Requirements for Playford Trust / BHP Honours Scholarship Qualification

Applicants must be:

• Ready to commence Honours in geoscience, mining engineering or chemical engineering at any one of the three South Australian universities
• An Australian citizen or a holder of a permanent resident visa and resident in South Australia
• Intending to spend a significant part of their career in South Australia, or be likely to provide a benefit to the State
• A high achiever, with an excellent undergraduate academic record
• Of good character. Preference will be given to students who display leadership potential.

It is essential that the applicant’s supervisor or an academic referee (e.g. dean of school/faculty, or lecturer) provides a supporting comment about the student’s achievements, character and leadership potential.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Playford Trust / BHP Honours Scholarship

Selection Criteria

The Playford Trust will consider nominations from students studying at one of the three South Australian universities, and reserves the right to accept or reject any or all of the nominations.

BHP and the Playford Trust will jointly make the final selection.
