Each year, approximately 20 scholars are invited to the Institute for residential fellowships. The School welcomes applications from junior and senior scholars across a wide range of fields in the social sciences and related disciplines. Members (as Institute fellows are known) have access to campus resources and facilities, including offices, libraries, subsidized dining services, and housing. About half of those invited are working in the year's designated theme, half on other projects.

The School seeks to provide 50% of base salary, with the expectation that the Member's home institution, sabbatical funding, and/or other grants will cover the remainder. Maximum stipend is $80,000. Factors affecting stipend calculation include base salary, availability of leave pay and other institutional support, and/or other grants/awards.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, awarded no later than October 15th of the year in which they are applying (i.e., the IAS application deadline).
Fellowship is residential and for the full academic year (September–May).
You can apply if your research project does not focus on the School's theme. In any given year, about half of successful applicants propose projects directly pertaining to the School's theme. Applications not relating to the theme are equally welcome.

You must be be affiliated with an academic institution. Most applicants hold a position at an academic or research institution, but it is not required.

The Institute welcomes fellowship applications from scholars regardless of citizenship or national origin. As a US Department of State designated J1 Exchange Visitor Program Sponsor, the Institute issues paperwork for our foreign scholars to apply for J1 status; their legal spouses and dependent children can be sponsored on a J-2 Exchange Visitor Visa.
