Department of Oceanography at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is organizing an international training program on “Statistical Analysis of Oceanographic Data” in-collaboration with Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research; Marine Research, Center for Policy Research at Universiti Sains Malaysia; and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). This training is funded by POGO (Partnership for Observation of Global Ocean).
The training program will be conducted over 10 days, with five days of online sessions followed by five days of in-person sessions at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).The online sessions will include theoretical lectures and hands-on data analysis in R, while the in-person sessions will focus on practical training in ODV, QGIS, and R, utilizing real oceanographic data.
After a long struggle and a relentless movement, the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was established in 1986. The only university of its kind at that time, it started it's career on the 1st Phalgun(13th of February 1991) with only three departments: Physics, Chemistry and Economics, 13 teachers and 205 students. It has now expanded to 7 schools, 27 departments and two institutes. The number of teachers has grown to 566 and the students to 8596. The grants will cover international travel, accommodation, and meals. The grants will not cover expenses incurred by the fellow in their own nation (e.g., domestic travel, visa costs, personal insurance and COVID test).
Participants who request partial support and contribute to their training costs from other sources will be given preference.
This training program is open to early career scientists, technicians, postgraduate students (PhD or MSc), and post-doctoral researchers involved in relevant fields of marine science. A limited number of grants will be available for participants from developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

Course outline and Pre-requisites
This course will encompass fundamental statistics and advanced oceanographic data analysis using R. It will also include oceanographic data visualization with ODV and other GIS software. Candidates are expected to have a basic understanding of statistics. The medium of instruction will be English, and participants are required to bring their own laptops.
