The purpose of this scholarship is to reward the academic achievement of full-time students about to enter the final year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury.
About University Of Canterbury
Established in 1873 Canterbury College, as it was then known, was only the second university in Aotearoa New Zealand.
It was set up on the Oxbridge model with one major difference: women students were admitted from the start. An early graduate, Helen Connon, became the first woman in the then British Empire to win honours.
Housed in graceful stone buildings on a central city block, the College was dependent on rents from high country farms with which it had been endowed by the Canterbury Provincial Council.

Requirements for University of Canterbury Grant Lingard Scholarship Qualification
- Applicants must be full-time students about to enter the final year of a BFA degree in the School of Fine Arts.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time in the final year of a BFA degree during tenure of the scholarship.
- Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable
Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Must be enrolled full-time in the final year for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury
Interview date, Process and Venue for University of Canterbury Grant Lingard Scholarship
Selection process:
- Several scholarships are normally available annually. The number of scholarships available each year will be determined by the amount of funds available for disbursement according to the University’s investment policy.
- The scholarship is awarded by Te Kaunihera | University Council on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising:
- The Tumu Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor (or nominee);
- The Head of the School of Fine Arts (or nominee);
- The Dean of Creative Arts (or nominee); and
- A representative of the Lingard family.
Selection criteria:
- In making the recommendation/s, the selection committee gives equal consideration to:
- Academic merit; and
- The applicant’s projected studio work for the year in which the scholarship is to be held and their reasons for doing it.
In the event of two or more applicants being of equal or similar academic merit, preference will be given to a student whose family is located in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand.
- If, in any year, there is no candidate of sufficient merit, no scholarship is offered.

- Applications must be made online at the Scholarships website1 by 31 October.
- A required part of the application form is a short written statement outlining the applicant’s projected studio work for the year in which the scholarship is to be held, indicating their reasons for doing that work.
