The John Allan Scholarship in Education was made possible by a donation from John Allan, the first Principal of the Hamilton Teachers’ College. John Allan held this position for twenty years until his retirement in 1979. During that time, he successfully implemented innovative teacher education programmes including a three-year primary training qualification, one year longer than existing programmes. John Allan’s vision and progressive leadership was acknowledged when he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by The University of Waikato in 1980. One Scholarship will be awarded annually. The funds are held in trust by the University of Waikato Foundation and the Scholarship will be offered until such time as the funds are depleted, approximately 2027.
The Scholarship provides financial assistance to a student undertaking research towards a masters degree in the Division of Education at the University of Waikato, and who best meets the donor’s wish to stimulate research into ways of making teaching more effective.
This University is committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio, providing a full and dynamic university experience, distinctive in character, and pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge.
