Flinders University 2022 Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship

The Commonwealth government and Flinders University have established the Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (ICECS) to assist indigenous students with costs associated with their study at Flinders University.

Aim and Benefits of Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship

The 2022 value is $2,756.00 per annum ($1,378.00 per semester).  

Scholarships awarded mid year will only be valid for one semester, therefore students awarded mid year will get a single payment of $1,378.00 only.

The number of ICECS available each year will be determined by annual funding from the Commonwealth government. 


Requirements for Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship Qualification

All scholarship applicants must:

  • be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
  • identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and
  • be accepted as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander by the community in which they live or have lived; and
  • normally be enrolled full-time at Flinders University in an undergraduate or postgraduate course of study or the Foundation Studies program; and
  • not be in receipt of a Student Start-up Scholarship or Student Start-up Loan (available to ABSTUDY, Austudy and Youth Allowance recipients); and
  • be able to demonstrate financial disadvantage or have a permanent home address in Inner or Outer Regional, Remote or Very Remote Australia as defined by the Australian Standard Geographic Classification (ASGC).

Interested applicants can check if their home address qualifies as rural or regional by using the Doctor Connect website.

Scholarships will be available in both areas of financial need and remoteness of permanent home address. Scholarships will be available to both commencing students (main round in semester one and mid-year round) and continuing students (main round in semester one only). Previous recipients of an Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship may reapply but will be limited to a maximum of 8 payments in total.

Interview date, Process and Venue for Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship

In selecting recipients the following factors will be considered:

  • the applicant’s permanent home address
  • financial need
  • University entrance pathway and score (commencing students)
  • GPA (continuing students)

Selection of the candidate(s) will be made in accordance with procedures approved by the Director, Student Administration, in consultation with the Office of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement.

How to Apply

Applications should be submitted online through the Flinders University Student System by the specified closing date. Applicants will need to login and navigate to the My Scholarships tab to submit an application. The application form for this scholarship is called "Indigenous Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships".  Please read the how to apply page and ensure all of your personal details are up-to-date in Student Two as you will be assessed using the information in the Student System, including home and semester address, indigenous status, citizenship etc.

As part of your application, you will need to prove you are from a rural/regional area and/or are in financial need.

Students who are applying on the basis of financial need will need to demonstrate either:

  1. They are in receipt of government means-tested benefits such as ABSTUDY, Youth Allowance etc, OR
  2. Other financial hardship using the Financial Hardship form below.

Students who are applying on the basis of rural/regional residency will need to provide a rural/regional address. This is normally recorded in the Student System as your home address which should be different to your semester address. If you no longer have a rural/regional address you will need to upload evidence demonstrating that you lived in a rural/regional area prior to undertaking your current study.
