University of Kent PhD Studentship in Social Work–UKRI Future Leadership Fellowship Project 2025 (Fully Funded)

A fully funded PhD studentship in social work is being advertised (open to overseas applicants as well as home applicants), for 36 months, on a full-time basis, by the University of Kent. The PhD Studentship is linked to the UKRI funded Future Leader Fellowship grant (MR/X033104/1) entitled “Hair and Care: Examining Black Children and Young People’s Experiences of Exclusion and Belonging in Social Care and Education Settings in England”, and is led by Dr Sweta Rajan-Rankin, Reader in Social Work, University of Kent. The PhD studentship will be located within Work Package 2 which explores Black children and young people’s experiences of trans-racial adoption. The successful candidate will be working closely with the supervisory team including Dr Sweta Rajan-Rankin, Dr Aravinda Kosaraju, and supported by Professor Ravinder Barn, Royal Holloway University, who is leading the transracial adoption project.

The PhD student will be able to develop a discrete research proposal that fits the wider remit of the transracial adoption project. The successful applicant will join a vibrant and inter-disciplinary team and will have opportunities to be part of project training, conferences and assist with project fieldwork.

We particularly welcome applications from exceptional research applicants from Black British, Black Caribbean, Black African and BAME ethnic backgrounds. This is to support research excellence and capacity building among under-represented groups and to enable participant insights into the lives of Black children and families.
